We are looking for a Junior Research Analyst to join our Catastrophe Modelling Model Research and Evaluation team in London. Catastrophe modelling plays a key role in the (re)insurance industry, mainly in helping to determine the internal capital and the reinsurance requirements for various (re)insurance companies. All models available across the industry are imperfect, therefore it is very important to understand their strengths and weaknesses, as well as develop adjustments to correct for their more significant biases. Within this framework, the role of catastrophe model research and evaluation has been rapidly expanding, as more data has become available, more models have been built, regulatory agencies have been making stricter demands on model users and, generally, the sophistication of model users has been increasing. The individual we are looking for would have an analytical background and would be supporting the team members in all stages of model research and evaluation process.

The Role

  • Supporting the team members in all work involved within the model research and evaluation process (e.g. collecting data for different perils, generating exhibits, producing/editing evaluation reports, proof-reading documents, etc)

  • Support the design, planning, coordination and production of model sensitivity analyses for different territories and multiple perils (world-wide coverage)

  • Help to address client requests across all nat-cat perils, i.e. flood, wind and earthquake

  • Effectively communicate with team members, business-units, brokers and clients

  • Support team members in automating output-generation processes and creating specific analytical tools

  • Build and maintain a library of outputs for instant use by analysts and brokers

The Requirements

  • Undergraduate degree in natural sciences, geo-sciences, applied mathematics or related subject

  • Master’s degree

  • Experience analysing and visualising spatial data (ArcGIS/ESRI, R, Python or equivalent)

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

  • Strong analytical skills and keen attention to detail

  • High level of competence with MS Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)

  • A genuine interest in natural perils and risk management

  • Understanding of Flood-related matters, basic Hydrology/Hydraulics

  • Good knowledge of statistics

  • Knowledge of Programming in R, Python or equivalent

  • Experience working with databases
