JOB DESCRIPTION

We are searching for a Data Engineer with a passion for creating and managing innovative data assets to join our analytical team.

Our analytical team are experienced data scientists and actuaries who help our MGAs to evaluate, price and manage their risks & business operations. Our analyses and models are based on a wide variety of data sources: proprietary claims experience, market indexes, company financial performance, public open data and novel sensor streams. Typical data sources have low velocity & volume, high variety and high priority on the veracity & value: we’re looking for someone to bring a rigorous approach & deep understanding to data curation.

The Role

  • We are looking for an experienced data engineer to help acquire, create and manage innovative data assets for the team. These assets will draw from various sources – internal and external systems, flat files, databases, external APIs and so on

  • You will manage the pipelining (collection, storage, access), engineering (cleansing, feature creation / selection) and understanding (documentation, exploration) of this data

  • As a new venture we have very little technical debt, so you will also have an opportunity to help shape our frameworks and methodologies

  • Support the team in stakeholder engagement and reporting

The Requirements

  • Minimum of a degree in a quantitative subject, ideally containing computer science, software engineering, databases, or machine learning modules

  • Demonstrated experience working as a data engineer or software engineer with a focus on data, ideally in the financial services industries

  • Strong grounding in Python, SQL and Bash scripting, particularly for accessing and wrangling data from different sources

  • The ability to design, implement and use effective database structures and datacube structures to ensure data is organised effectively and ready for downstream reporting and analysis

  • The ability to collect raw data, transform, manipulate, combine and understand it, describe it creatively and prepare it for further analysis

  • The ability to understand the pitfalls in different data sources and to perform necessary provenance and lineage checks, and implement data quality validation and testing

  • A passion for quality software coding, data and analytics and some knowledge of statistics

  • Experience working in a structured environment and desire for good documentation, exceptional delivery, effective organisation, and high-quality communication with team and customers
