The Willis Towers Watson Global Captive Practice provides expertise in designing, forming, managing and providing strategic guidance to captives of all types in over 35 major captive domiciles. Willis Towers Watson is engaged with more than 700 captives worldwide, approximately 450 of which are under management with gross premiums in excess of $5.8 billion and total captive assets of nearly $33 billion. There are three principal aspects to our services for captives: Captive Consulting, Captive Management, and Actuarial Services. The Practice has over 200 dedicated employees, including CPAs, risk finance specialists, actuaries, captive management experts and strategic planning consultants.

The Role

With minimal supervision, the Associate Director will have overall responsibility for management of a portfolio of captive insurance companies, and be responsible for producing accurate and pertinent information on a timely basis to enable the captive boards to make informed decisions.

  • To assist Domicile Managing Director in the development of new business for the Company

  • Provide leadership for the creation of a marketing and new business strategy.

  • To assist Domicile Managing Director in implementing marketing and new business strategy.

  • Identify new business opportunities (including cross-selling opportunities) within existing and new client base.

  • Take responsibility for a significant number of new business development projects.

  • Promote the Company within and outside the Willis Group.

  • To provide technical advice on request within the Practice.

  • Liaison with insurance broker and reinsurance brokers as required.

  • Underwriting decisions in conjunction with the Client Service Team and the Practice Underwriting resources, as appropriate.

  • Monitoring of exposures and risk transfer pricing within assigned portfolio.

  • Obtaining regulatory approval for changes to the business plan.

  • Obtain Board approval for underwriting decisions.

  • Responsible for ensuring all policies and reinsurance documents are in order in conjunction with the Practice Underwriting resources

  • Monitoring of domicile solvency and capital requirements

  • Accounting for premium

  • Agree reserving methodology

  • Ensure the production of management accounts, statutory accounts and information, budgets, cash flow statements and supplementary information as required.

  • Assist with the adoption of appropriate accounting practices and ensure adherence thereto.

  • Manage cash requirements of the companies

  • Liaise with and monitor investment managers in respect of invested funds

  • Primary client board representation.

  • Ensure timely production of board papers.

  • Ensure timely production of minutes and review prior to distribution.

  • Action matters arising from client meetings

  • Ensure compliance with Corporate Governance.

  • To provide leadership on, participate in and provide input on strategic and major operational issues. Assume responsibility for a specific area of company strategy.

  • Contact is maintained with all client directors and that they are advised of any developments.

  • Keep Practice leadership apprised of client developments.

  • Manage E&O risk through appropriate documentation as well as understanding risk management responsibilities: WEM, Code of Conduct, the reporting of irregularities, HR engagement, etc. and take necessary action when appropriate. Ensure senior leadership is aware of day to day gaps within captive service team (ie level of staff, expertise of staff, any communication issues, etc.)


  • 4 year degree in Accounting, Finance or related area or CPA qualification

  • License not required

  • In depth knowledge and experience of captive insurance and insurance industry (minimum 10 years’ experience) in the following areas: (1) accounting for captives (2) insurance products, and (3) problem resolution

  • WillisTowers Watson knowledge (platforms, structure, etc)

  • Ability to monitor quality control

  • Client relationship skills

  • Project Management skills

  • Advanced presentation skills
